Default 1994 Waverunner 3 GP Help

Hi,
I am new to the forum so first off I would like to say hello and thanks in advance.

I was just given a 1994 Waverunner 3 GP. I believe it is a 701 cc Single carb motor. This ski has not been in the water since 1996 and is in fairly good condition, besides missing its battery.

My question is after I buy the battery what steps should I take to make sure the ski is in good order before I try and start it?

It currently has about 3/4 tank of gas and oil in it. Assuming I should drain both and refill them, what is the best way to do this.

And finally my newbie question, I don't need to premix gas like 2 stroke motorcycles do I.

Thanks!

Definitely get rid of the old gas. I'd check the fuel lines and oil lines for cracks..........they tend to do that sitting around so long. You will probably need a new fuel filter. Pull the spark plugs and clean or replace them. Drop some oil down into the cylinders be sure you can turn the engine over with the spark plugs out. Be sure the impeller has not rusted to the wear ring. You should be able to turn everything by hand with the spark plugs out. I recommend cleaning and/or rebuilding the carbs. They are going to be gunked up sitting that long with fuel in them.

You don't need premix unless the previous owner converted for that..........I'd ask them just to be sure, because a lot of guys just leave the oil tank in place after the conversion.

Thanks for the quick response.
As far as removing the gas and oil is siphoning the best way to do it? Also I just run regular pump gas then correct, or should I use premium? Also how much Oil should I put in the cylinder?
I am excited for the project this wave runner looks a lot more fun to work on than my dirt bike. Plus living in San Diego it should get a whole lot more use once I get it going. I am just hoping I don't do anything stupid because of my lack of knowledge being that I have never worked on these types of motors yet.

Thanks again

Yea siphon the gas is the only way. I'd remove as much of the old oil as possible, but its not as critical as the gas. Not a bad idea to run premium for the first tank, and put some SeaFoam in it, that will help clear the fuel system.

Probably a better idea than dropping oil in there is to spray some fogging oil down the spark plug holes. Another option is to use some penetrating oil, and spray it in there and let it sit for a few minutes before you try to turn the engine over. You just want a little lubrication when you start moving the pistons, since they have been sitting so long without any lube.

On these skis having an oil line come loose, or break is a big reason for engine failures, so really check out the oil lines and clamps if it hasn't been converted to premix.

Those 700 engines were good ones.

Good Luck!
