'99 Yamaha XL1200 - Throttle issue
Hi Guys,
I'm new to the sport of PWC's and recently purchased a '99 XL1200. When I first purchased the ski it ran without any problems. Unfortunately, soon after purchase 2 female friends managed to flip the ski (low speed turn, leaned the wrong way) , they then "un-capsize" it the wrong way and introduced water into the engine. I followed the shop manual's instructions for removing water from the engine and got it running again.
The next time I took the ski out, it had a very "on/off" throttle response that I hadn't experienced before. From a dead stop, if you pin the throttle the engine spins to roughly 5k RPM and acts like it is bogging or under a heavy load. After about 5-6 seconds it spins up to 7.5K and pulls hard up onto plane. When up on plane, the motor refuses to run between 5k and 6K RPM. It will either tool along below 5K and refuse to climb above that number unless you apply full throttle, at which time it shoots to redline. If you try to back-off the throttle it immediately falls to or below 5K rpm. 5K-6.5K rpm is a no-man's land.
Since the ski was flipped, I have:
-run a full tank of fuel through it thinking it was water in the fuel.
-run a half-tank of oil through it.
-changed the spark plugs
-added and run about a half-tank of carb/fuel injector cleaner thinking I had something possibly plugging the low speed jets in the carbs
-I have a fuel filter on order, but I don't think this is the issue as once it makes it past 6.5k, it pulls hard no problem and is happy to run WOT all day.
Any other suggestions or tips of things I should try? I searched the forum and wasn't able to find anyone else who has had this situation. I apologize if the topic has already been addressed and I wasn't able to find it.
Cheers,
-Tim
