Default Serious replies only please

I'm interested in buying this 2002 Waverunner GP1200R by the end of the month if all goes well. The seller knows nothing about waverunners, he had the money, bought one, then realized that he had no time to use it. I took a look around and this is what I found.

The owner says it is stock, it's not premixed, all original parts, runs great. He gave me permission to do a compression check and is willing to drop it somewhere so I can get a test run.

Here's some behind the scene info. He and I are both military and stationed at Ft. Dix NJ so I don't think he would intentionally jam me up with junk. He is selling only because he's being stationed elsewhere at the end of the month. My concern is since he doesn't know much about Waverunners his ability to provide proper maintainance was lacking. My only concern is the apperance of so much oxidation on the motor. If you guys tell me it's nothing to worry about I'd feel better picking it up and cleaning it up. I have no experience with waverunner issues because mine has NEVER given me issues. My ski's interior looks like new 11yrs later. So let me know what you think about how this looks and if it tells you something serious or just a simple clean up.

Thanks

It doesn't look good, but hard to tell if the damage extends beyond the surface without doing a compression check (120 psi would be ideal, but 110+ on all cylinders is OK), and a test ride. I think that engine should hit around 7000 rpms and reach the upper 50s for speed. If all that checks out, it would probably be OK, but take a close look at the pump. The housing and impeller to see if there is corrosion/rust there. If you buy it, I'd give the whole thing a bath in some anti-corrosive.

Other thing to look at is, I think the 2002 models still had the problems with the powervalves failing, and I doubt your friend fixed that, so I'd look into adding the clips to fix that problem if you buy the ski. The catylitic converter is also common to fail around the 10 year point, so I'd look at adding a "D" plate.

Factor all that in plus the corrosion, I would'nt make a high offer.

Thanks Earnest, I don't know thhis guy I just called him up when I saw this at our on post used cars etc.. lot. I will check on all those pointers you gave me. Kelly book has it at about $4,300 retail, Nada has it at $3,300 retail for good condition (Of course thats dealer padding for advertising etc). He is asking $2,500 OBO. I was thinking of offering $2,000 this will leave me funds to take care of any issues that may need attention. Good?

If it runs perfect and the compression is really good, and it has less than 100 hours, and you can't find anything else, I might go with $2000, but in my area I've seen mint condition GP and XL 1200s selling for 3K. In the next couple of months there will be more and more good deals out there as the season ends.

You could add a D plate and clips for the powervalves for a couple of $100. If its been sitting awhile, plan on having to clean/rebuild the carbs. also..........another couple of $100 if you do it yourself...........2X that to have someone else do it.

I didn't see the HID# plate. On my waverunner its right dead center of the stern platform. Any idea where I could find it on thhis machine? I've googled and searched this site and came up with nothing.

If he has no time for it, then that means he has let it sit for awhile. My friend and I bought a couple of Kawasaki's that had been in storage for 6 years. The corrosion was a nightmare as was getting them unning. We learned the hard way that the worst thing for these jet ski's is to let them sit. We had one running for awhile but the maintainence was a nightmare. Luckily, we were able to sell them and get a brand new Yamaha Waverunner. So my best advice would be to not buy this and it is based on experience.

So I take it you're in FL?

I'm not sure that I'm totally comfortable with this purchase the third picture in concerns me. and I think I have to follow my gut. If I knew the inside of the engine was good I'd dive in, but it's the most important part of the machine and Im not qualified to inspect the internals. The fuel/Oil sat for a year so I don't feel comfortable cranking it up. This unit would probably be good for a person handy with a PWC but I need a turn key unit.

One of my buddies told me the cylinders may reflect the outside. During further inspection I noticed that the stabilizers $30, Impeller $100, Mats $110, Glove compartment door $50 needed replacement. If he accepted $2,000 that would put me at almost $2,300 and would still leave me with a questionable engine. As you said I'm sure I should be able to find one in at least very nice condition for $3,000. So I just bidded $2,500 on a nice clean 2003 GP1300R in PA but the reserve was not met. I'm guessing his reserve will be about 3,000-3,500.
