Default major electrical problem

hey guys im having a big problem here with my 2002 yamaha 1200 xlt. i bought it not working and when trying to get it to turn over i burnt up a battery. smoke and extremely hot. so i figured it was the starter so i put a new one in and it worked fine. today i put a d plate it. i didnt disconnect the terminals or anything. so i started it up and ran it after words and it was fine. i went to run it again and it woult turn over for about 3 second and then stop without me letting off the button. then like 3 seconds after that you can here the starter move again. well after that happen a few times it went haywire and was burning up the battery again. it was trying to start even though i had the kill switch off and wasnt trying to start it and as i was running away i could see the ground terminal glowing. lol. well when i went back after i let it cool down i saw that the negative terminal was melted off. what could it be

Sounds like a short somewhere. You need to trace all the wires, especially the ones to the starter and the starter solenoid, and look for places where the insulation has been rubbed off. Be sure you have the leads connected at the right places on the starter and not reversed. Check the solenoid to be sure its not shorted (may have to replace with a known working one to know for sure).

If you are melting the battery terminals you have a short some place.............that's the only thing that will do it that I know of to pull that much current.
