My 1999 Genesis was the same way. It is actually designed to go into a "sleep mode", and the screen would continue to appear "on" until you hit either the starter button or the display button when the red gauge light will flash and the speedo dial will reset. When I had mine in for service the last time, the mechanic suggested installing an on/off switch for the battery just to be safe. Now i turn it off when finished for the day.
