I' d like to know how to remove starting motor on '98 XL1200.

Now,I'm trying to remove it as engine is put on pwc.
If It's possible,I would like to know how to remove at narrow space.
I can't remove starting motor, it's narrow space, sticked on engine.

Or, do I have to remove engine away at first?
After that, I think it seems to easy to remove starting motor...:(

Thanks!

We just did this last week with engine in ski. It is a royal pain on the'98XL! You'll have to disconnect and remove upper exhaust pipe. You can then reach around manifold to remove 2 bolts holding starter. But....
Why do you want to replace starter? Are you sure it is bad?
It turned out our problem was with missing teeth on Bendix not engaging starter motor. Starter motor would run but would not crank engine. Had to replace Bendix which is even bigger chore but doesn't require removing starter or exhaust pipe.
