I called Yamaha and asked them for the price on a new starter and they quoted me a 729.00 price for an OEM starter. Then they said they had another starter which was after market MES for 229.00. I asked the sales guy if the after market was as good as the OEM and he said they last about a year and OEM was best.

This is the first time I've had to replace the starter on my '98 XL1200 so I'm guessing the factory starter is a good starter. I also believe you get what you pay for, but 729.00 for an OEM starter is way out there. I've also seen new starters on ebay for 57.00, and I'm hearing they're all made in China.

Anybody have any endorsements on starters? Which one is good? Does an MES only last a year or two? Are the cheap ones okay?
