I picked up a 91 650sx, my first ski. i've been riding friends' skis for ~1year. The thing starts right up without hesitation. I have not let the ski run for more than 15 seconds for obvious reasons. I guess my next step is to hook it up to the hose and run it for a longer period?

In reality I'd like to simply get it out on the river and take it for a rip, checking for obvious deficit. the other part of me thinks I should drain the gas, clean the carbs, examine for leaks, possibly due a top end. Although the ski seems to run very well, I'm afraid to take it out on the water and run into catastrophic problems after 10 minutes (that could have been otherwise avoided if I had just opened up the ski and gone over the entire thing.

What is your protocol after purchasing a new (to you) ski that has not been used regularly in ~5 years (registration was 2012)?

Thanks!

update: I drained the gas tank, cleared the lines, cleaned the carb, and refueled. Started right up and seems to be running fine. It definitely revs slightly longer than I feel it should after I let off of the throttle. Perhaps an air leak. But I still feel shaky taking this thing out. Like its going to be running lean and i'll burn up a piston. This is no way to live!
