The reference JW gave me has an OEM Yamaha reverse cable for $83.00. $16.00 shipping and won't be delivered for about two weeks. SBT and others have the cable for a lesser price, but is it a lesser cable? Question is, go with OEM or the other brands? I might even try the local dealer for a price before I buy on-line.

SBT has a cable listed for a "2001 XL 1200." I officially have a 2001 XLT (it says so on the side in big letters) 1200. Would the standard reverse cable for 2002 up fit the 2001?

I'm pretty sure I can install the cable myself, using the wire and "fish-tape" method.

I'm just glad it broke on the trailer rather than on the water.

OK, so I broke down and ordered an OEM Yamaha part. I really think that an SBT part would suffice, as a reverse cable is not a vital, functioning part of the drive train, but I decided to keep the ski all Yamaha. I'll keep you posted on the replacement project.

On the bright side have drilled holes in the skis and I'm ready to plumb and wire the automatic bilge pumps. One less thing to worry about when the machines finally get into the water.

i have a 99 xlt and the shield on my reverse cable is split so when I use it will not drop the gate all the way and I have been putting it off cuz my dealer quoted me a few hundred to run the new cable plus like you said like 80-100 for the cable... I'm interested if you try the fish tape idea please let me know if you get that to work or is their a video or a walk though I would consider trying that.

I am ready to attempt the reverse cable repair as soon as the part comes in. I have opened up my copy of the XLT service manual, which has the correct routing for the cable. I will try and take pictures for future reference on this site. It's basically taking the cable loose from the reverse lever, attaching a wire FIRMLY to the reverse lever part of the reverse cable, loosening the cable from where it goes through the hull and the reverse bucket, and pulling the cable and attached wire through the PWC. Hopefully the wire will still be attached when the cable is removed, so the new cable is FIRMLY attched to the wire, the wire and cable are pulled through the hull, and then attached at both ends = repaired reverse cable = 1/2 hour of time = $200 savings by not having to deal with the repair shop.

I should have the project done with pictures by the weekend. Only supposed to be 70 degrees around here, but I'm going to try to get the machines in the water this weekend anyway.

Bilge pump project is finished, with a working automatic bilge pump in each ski.
