I own and maintenance a 2002 Yamaha FX140. I discovered something by accident and find it to be very helpful. I am posting in hope that others can benefit from this experience.

After owning and riding for many years I noticed that through the winter my reverse lever would become stuck. I tried greasing the ends where I could reach and found that if I left it in the “halfway” position, I could work it back and forth until it loosened up. If it were NOT in the halfway position it would freeze and be almost impossible to operate. Working this lever back and forth to loosen it became part of my routine maintenance (I am aware of the method of forcing lubricant into shielded cables)

The following is something odd, unplanned, and unexpected that completely addressed the problem. (I am not overlooking the fact that shielded cables do need periodic lubrication internally)

What seemed to be unrelated to the reverse cable was my personal desire to prolong the life of my trailer and slow the corrosion process. I learned that the combination of 50% motor oil and 50% kerosene could be sprayed onto the trailer and it would slow the degradation due to corrosion. I bought a yard sprayer and filled it partially with the ingredients. I sprayed the trailer and found that it works magnificently. It of course does not stop rust but drastically reduces the speed of the process.

In the process of spraying, I spray the rear of the ski including the bucket, mechanism, etc.

After a short period of time passed I noticed my reverse lever was now freely and easily operational.

The difference is SIGNIFICANT. The lever has gone from being a stuck lever that regularly needs to be worked and free-ed up, to a lever that stays constantly loose, free, and easily operational.
