Just purchased a 2003 Yamaha Waverunner XLT1200 with 80 hours. Ski runs great, took it out on the bay the other day but ended up sucking up a TON of seaweed resulting in an engine overheat. I was panicking when my ski would rev, but there was no thrust. The the smoke and burning smell and the annoying BEEPING. Had to row into shore.

Anyway, everything is in working condition except the fuel cock knob which is stuck in the ON position. The knob seems to be jiggling in its slot and can be lifted in and out of the slot slightly. Questions: How crucial is it to be turned OFF when the engine is not running? Anyway to easily fix it?

The previous owner says he just kept it ON no matter what, but now that it is home, I realize that it was ON all the time because it is broken; NOT because he just wanted it to be ON. Any help/advise would be greatly appreciated.
