1. Remove the fuel tank and set it next to the ski. Connect the fuel hoses to the carburetor.
2. Remove the flywheel cover.
3. Reinstall the front 2 starter mounting bolts to hold the starter motor in position.
4. FIND TDC FOR THE FRONT CYLINDER
5. Attach a rigid pointer to one of the flywheel cover bolts. Align the pointer with "T" mark on the flywheel. See attached picture.
6. Connect a timing light according to manufacturer's directions.
7. Connect a tachometer according to the manufacturer's directions.
8. Connect the engine to the garden hose as it will be run onshore.
9. Start the engine and warm it to normal operating temperature. Point the timing light at the pointer and timing marks. Then, increase engine speed to 6000 rpm and note the timing marks and pointer. If the timing is correctly adjusted, the "F" mark on the flywheel aligns with the pointer.
10. If the timing is not correct, loosen the stator plate set screw through the holes in the flywheel. Then, turn the stator plate as required to obtain the correct timing. Securely retighten the stator screws and recheck the timing as described in Step 9.

hi Knight im Kawasaki1984 i think the timing may be out on my kawa 550sx because these fuel going in and plugs are sparking and compression i was wondering where or what is the timing light or is that separate tool i need get?and i dont have tachometer on mine. please help me :thumbsup:


P.s im getting manual for it in few days but trying get this running for weekend so i can join my buddys out in sea

Should'nt the pointer hit the mark between 20 and 12 degrees before
the mark? I can remember that we once tested the timing of a 550
with a motortester because you can't adjust a normal timing light to
flash 20 degrees before the mark, with a motor tester you can!
Or am I now confused with my 750sx???????????

confused with 750sx lol would it still be same 550sx ? il get new battery and try if fails il have invest new starter motor lol startin to get fed up with this project but i wont give up that engine WILL fire up lol

how do i get nut off thats holding flywheel on because it turning crank over when i try undo nut i dont want break anything whilst im trying take it off

If you go to Checker/ Kraegan Auto you can get a digital timing light with tach for about $90 as per below. It will do + or - 40 degrees and 0-10,000 rpm

550SX Problems!

I just recently rebuilt the engine and the carb on my 1990 Kawasaki 550SX.
I got it running and took it out to the lake tied it to the dock and tried to dial in the carb. It seem to run fine when tied to the dock, but when I untie it doesn't run right. I have also noticed when I put the cover on after I adjust it boggs.
Any ideas, I am at my wit's end.
