So I recently picked up a 84 JS550 non running. Got it home, seemed like the timing was off. Took the flywheel inspection thing off to see how the flywheel looked. After playing with the carb, it fired right up and ran awesome. After thinking I had fixed the problem I put everything back together and tried firing it up again. Same issue as before started again. Then I thought to myself, it ran great with the flywheel inspection cap off. So I took it off and sure enough, runs great again! Any idea why this would be happening? I’m honestly very confused. This is my first ski so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Do you have a choke or a primer? Check compression and if it’s good go ahead and rebuild carb/fuel pump and go from there.
Aftermarket carb/pump kit on Amazon is cheap
