Motor stopped....started to sink....

6537 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Knightofwyte
I was driving my 1999 Kawasaki 1100STX today. After about 15 min of being on the water the motor quits and i feel the jetski starting to sink. The plugs were in. I got it on the trailer and got all the water out and inspected the bottom and i saw no damage or anything wrong. I put the trailer back in the water with the jet on it and it started to fill up with water again. The water looks like it was coming from the back. So I am not sure what the problem is. Could anyone out here help me with this problem.

Thanks Much.

check all your cooling lines
You can put some water in the hull while the ski's on the trailer, that way you can see/watch where the water leaks out. Definately check you cooling lines, but normally the engine would overheat with a cooling line disconnected.

Did your engine overheat? Is that why it cut-off? Before filling the hull with water look for disconnected or broken hoses.
took it to the dealer and a bearing on the shaft was damaged.
Figures, that would be the driveshaft bearing which is surrounded by seals to keep water out. When the bearing goes, the driveshaft isn't supported fully and can allow water past the seals. If the dealer hasn't done the work yet and you feel like taking on the task the parts are only $24. It would involve removing the engine though...

The kit comes from Waverunner, Jet Ski, Personal Watercraft Parts & Accessories for Yamaha WaveRunner, Kawasaki Jet Ski, Sea Doo, Polaris, Tiger Shark & Wet Jet Watercraft. and includes #10-14.

thanks for the help. its already been at the dealer for a week and they said he would cost about $500.
That $500 is about $400 in labor. they charge more for parts at the dealerships. The same kit I priced you costs around $75 from the dealer!! The remainder of you're bill goes to engine removal and reinstallation! It's not a difficult process but it can be difficult for the details...
