My guess would be an oil pressure relief valve like you said. Don't know if this applies to Honda, but many skis have this type of valve (and you are right it is usually in the oil pump) that has a spring type system that controls the oil pressure. If this part got corroded like other parts of the engine, it could be causing too much pressure.

You need a service manual to see if you have a valve like this or not. Bad news it will probably be a beeatch to get to.
