the driveshaft threads into the coupler and the coupler threads onto the crank. you need a spanner wrench to hold the coupler and a wrench to unscrew the shaft

to remove the coupler from the crank, bring pto piston to Just before tdc and put a piece of rope into the plug hole to keep the engine from rotating.

Well
when i was spilting the case, i do not have the balansing rod in the
case??? nor did it have the gear on the crank to turn the bal--rod,{like
the manual show's} ihave ran the ski for a few weekend berfore my crank
seals went. also i only have one bearing on the pto side of the
crank??? [who ever did the motor] stuck two cranks seal on the pto side. hard
to belive it ran for two year fine whith this set up. Do i have to have
the balance rod???? iwill get the rite parts for the pto side. if the
snowmobile cranks are the same . Alot of friends ride sleds.

only the 900s came with a balance shaft, and it is recommend to remove it at rebuild as it is only more cause for engine failure. your 1000 is correct not having one
stick another bearing on there with one seal and you will be good to go
