I just bought a 2007 Yamaha VX sport. The handle bars seem to have too much play but I am not sure. I can move the whole steering column up and down about 1/2-3/4 inch. Is this normal? If not what part needs to be replaced?

Probably just need to tighten a few screws........either where the handle bar attaches or the base of the column.

All the screws that are visible are tight but I can't see inside the housing. The slop is inside the aluminum housing below the handle bars. Is that normal or is there a bushing inside the housing that may not be there or broken?

I would guess it is just loose not broken. On my brothers VX the steering is pretty tight (maybe 1/8" movement at the most). You will have to take the steering column apart to know for sure. I don't have a service manual for the VX, but here are a couple of parts diagrams that might help:

Did you find out what was causing the play in the steering? I have the same problem with my VX Deluse 2008.
