Not sure if you fixed this problem yet, but sounds most likely that it is a pinion assembly not engaging, may need a new starter pinion bendix.

Your starter is just a simple motor but the bendix is what connects the starter to the flywheel. You will have to take off the front cover, remove the flywheel with a puller and pull out the bendix. I was able to take my bendix apart and get it working but it would be easier to buy one.
