Stator is under the cover at the front of the engine, and should be your last option. Make sure the battery is good, an fully charged. All the plug wires must be grounded to the grounding posts or plugs. Do not just leave the hanging not attached to anything while cranking.
Look at cables and grounds first. There should be a ground from the engine to the electrical box. Check all the electrical connections, and try trimming about 1/2" off the plug wires.
Open the electrical box and check the connections to the coils for corrosion, and look for evidence of water intrusion into the box. pull the rectifier and look at the connections for corrosion.
Find a manual to get or download. It should have some testing values for the electrical components.
