Hi, I have a 2013 Waverunner FX Cruiser HO. My brother sucked up a rock but didn't know it. Wave runner wouldn't restarts so he got a gentle tow back to the dock.
I was able to get the rock out only a few hours later, but the battery was dead. When I connect a new battery (polarity is correct) i get a massive spark like it's shorting to ground. I don't see any melted wires at first glance.
My bother did try to start it a few times on the water. Any thoughts for my next step would be great.

Thanks in advance!

If it's out of the water, there is nowhere to short too. I would hook up another battery. If you have a meter check it for drain. Or hook up a charger.

If he tried to start it when it was wedged with a rock, it may have overloaded / overheated the starter or solenoid and damaged the circuitry there. Cannot imagine how it could produce a dead short, but could imagine the starter being stuck "On".
If its a dead short, don't connect the battery until you figure it out - you could start some stuff on fire.
Start by disconnecting the wiring, starter, solenoid, etc one at a time and testing them with a meter until you find where the problem is.
