Wave Runner & Wave jammer WR500

K, I am completely new to the world of PWC. I have road bikes, cars, boats.. just now pwc. Anyways.. I have just purchased 2, a 1991 waverunner and a 89 wavejammer. Both have the WR500. Only one had a battery, When I went to float test the one with the battery (The runner), all was well. It started right up, engine seemed to be pretty strong and no apparent leaks. Only one problem, it barely moves. I maybe hit 10 miles an hour.. maybe. with no real thrust in power. My first thought was impeller. But infortunately I'm not quite sure how to check for this. Today I replaced the no name plugs with the NGK's as well as degreased the engine \ bay. After the plug change it wouldnt start until I noticed and fixed a loose connection. Im kinda wondering If that was the problem to begin with. My problem now is that I have taken the thing half apart already to prep it for the paint so I cant exactly take it for a test spin or anything. I guess My question is ; Could someone please descibe a way that I can check the impeller or the impeller seal? Thanks in advance guys.

best bet is get a manual for it
the impeller has a wear-ring that some u can replace and some you can not
get the manual first and spend the money on it
try ebay
I dont have time to order a manual
K, so I flipped it onto its side.. For two reasons, to prep the side and the bottom for paint and to check out the grate/impeller setup. At this point I have taken both steel plates off. Is the impeller suppose to spin at all? or is it just gonna work against the motor? it looks a little damaged but not too bad. what should my next step be?
well get a manual at the libary or local bookstore
hey.. I had one do almost the same thing.. first.. CHANGE the fuel filter.. add a splash of carb cleaner to the filter before installing the new one.. also, make sure the drive shaft thru hull is greased. It's located under the plastice cover behind the engine. Mine had 2 10mm bolts holding the cover. That should help.;)
Wave jammer

I had an 88 wave jammer for 3-4 seasons and i loved it. Sometimes while riding it though it would bog down and i would have to take it in and clean out the screen. She was always good to go then. Only ever had one problem...broken steering cable. great pwc for cheap fun.
When buying a used ski, no matter what age, ALWAYS check the compression first! You could have a bad piston and the ski will run but only go slow in the water! Next, fuel filter. Carbs cleaned? The impeller should have NO damage. If it is bent, replace it, do not run it with a bent impeller. It should turn only with the motor. With it rightside up, pull the plugs and hand spin the "drive" shaft, the impeller should turn(this will take 2 people to see under the ski)If it spinds fine, you are ok, and grease the fitting once a year! PM make model and year and I can try to find you the manual/service manual in PDF format!

wr500 Impeller Inspection

I have a 92 wr500 Im working on for my son.First ski to us.How do you inspect impeller?I need a copy of manual in PDF so I can print viable pages.

I just purchased a 1988 WaveJammer with the similar issues, could someone please send me a repair manual too?!?!
should be something on the riva site. Just search the net on google. They are on there somewhere.

I got mine running!! I just drained the gas tank, put in fresh 50:1 mix, changed the plugs and it now runs like a champ! I think the gas that was in it was bad, causing it to run like crap. Hopefully it wasn't lean and caused and damage to the motor. I haven't had the compression checked but it seems to be running just fine for now. Good luck all.
wave jammers and runners have an over heat protector . they will not rev past 2500 rpm(i think thats th elimit) when they heat up. so check that as well i blew the motor up on my old jammer trying to tune the carb when it was running hot and i didnt know. so make sure you can flush it and check the ride plate underneath for any obstruction in the water exit . thats the circcl hole in the ride plate. also i have two jammers i made a custom ride plate for it. i added 1.5 inches and a lil fin to it. no more porposing and it turns on a dime with out throwing me off now

hi gkecorp; you wouldnt happen to know the compression for the wr500 would u? i have 2 92 wr500,s and 1 just out runs the other im waiting on a cdi unit for one right now but i want to test the compression also u wouldnt happen to know where i can get a repair manule for these would u u can pm me thx alot


oh also whats a good fuel/carb cleaner i could use is there a special kind just for jetskis?? thx for your help

This happened to me engine would rev up almost normal but very slugish and gut less. thought prop was slipping because it felt the same as when my boat prop was spun. but for me I had chipped the impeller didn't seem to be that big but it made a huge difference and it ended up I had two chips about the size of a quarter and it totally disrupts the vortex and big loss of power
