Am looking at a 2001 Kawasaki 900 STX jet ski. It has 154 hours on it. Is that considered a lot (too many) hours? What else should I be looking for before buying this pwc?

I guess it depends on how you look at it.

Dividing the hours by 9 years, that's only an average of 17 (approx) hours a season. I've put that many on mine in 2 months.

I guess it really comes down to how hard it was ridden for those 154 hours.

Again, just my opinion.

An hour meter is nothing more than a record of how long the engine has been run. It doesn't give an accounting of abuse, neglect, repairs, how it was maintained or stored in the off season. Now it will give you an idea of when major service may be needed even with the best care.

In a nutshell you could have an ski with lets say 25 hours registered be in worse condition that a ski with 75 hours registered. Simply because the ski with less hours could have been hydro locked, didn't watch oil level, sucked up sand and other Bozo nono's.

So an hour meter IMO is not as important as service records, visual inspection, sea trial and common sense. Because it is just a record of time not events.

I'd agree with Outlaw. 154 doesn't sound like many hours, but you never know until you look at it and most importantly ride it. Someone on this forum recently had a 6-8 year old ski with only 50 some hours, that had a totaled engine because it had been sitting so long without use.

Do a compression check before you buy it! A had a ZXI900 that ran well but eventually dropped compression to 0 in the rear cylinder.

yamaDoo, did you find out what caused the drop in compression (piston rings) and did you fix it by installing new pistons and rings?
