Question Pressure in fuel tank?

My missus has a 98 XL1200 and I am not sure if this is right or wrong so your help is very much appreciated. When I open the filler fuel cap to the fuel tank always a sh&t load of air comes out is this normal? I thought there was a fuel vent that prevented this from happening? Or is this normal? As my 09 FZS never has a build up of air in the fuel tank??

If the fuel tank was getting pressure in it what effects would it have on operating the ski??? would it damage anything??
